Carol is an accomplished commissioner who is committed to representing all Athenians and working to create a more equitable, welcoming, and Green community.
It’s also about staying true to her passions — advocating for public transportation and bike infrastructure, helping Athens stay true to its 100% renewal energy resolution, being a champion for Eastside businesses, and promoting just and equitable policies for all Athenians.

Carol is an experienced community leader, proving a strong advocate for her beliefs while in office since 2020. She has been a long-time leader in local alternative transportation efforts and other local projects, including SPLOST advisory committees, Athens in Motion and 100% Athens Renewable Energy Initiative .
Carol has been an Athens resident for almost 40 years and an Eastsider since 1995. She has raised two daughters, Clare and Anne Saunders, who attended Athens Montessori and Clarke County public schools.
She has a doctorate in education from UGA and is a retired Athens Technical College teacher and dean.
When she’s not busy with the commission, Carol loves cycling around the Athens-area country roads and attending Athens many cultural events.
